DPUs And The Future Of Distributed Infrastructure: A Packet Pushers Livestream Event

Drew Conry-Murray

If you want to understand Data Processing Units (DPUs) and how they might impact your work as a network or infrastructure professional, join the Packet Pushers and Dell Technologies for a sponsored Livestream event on January 23rd, 2023.

What’s A DPU? Is It Like A DUI?

It’s definitely not a DUI. DPUs are dedicated hardware that can be installed in servers to bring networking, security, and storage functions closer to workloads. DPUs can accelerate tasks such as routing, firewalling, encryption/decryption, and storage processing to improve performance. They can also be used to offload functions from CPUs, letting infrastructure teams devote more CPU cores to applications.

DPUs, like CPUs and GPUs, need third-party software and applications to make them useful. DPUs also need to integrate with management, monitoring, and automation tools. Efforts such as VMware’s Project Monterey create a software ecosystem to run applications and services on top of DPU hardware and provide API-based integration with management tools.

Why Should I Care?

While DPUs present new opportunities for distributed applications and services, they also create new challenges for infrastructure operators. Network, security, and storage capabilities are typically delivered by a limited number of specialized hardware devices. Virtualizing these capabilities and spreading them across hundreds or thousands of servers creates new challenges for provisioning, monitoring, management, and policy enforcement.

This free livestream, happening live via Zoom, features sessions designed specifically for networking and infrastructure pros to help them get a handle on DPUs. Sessions include:

  • Understanding DPUs for network engineers
  • Re-imagining data center infrastructure with VMware’s Project Monterey
  • Accelerating distributed workloads on DPUs
  • How Dell integrates DPUs and VMware software into hyperconverged infrastructure such as VxRail
  • Operational and business benefits of DPUs

The livestream event consists of six short, informative presentations, hosted by the Packet Pushers in a conversational style. We take an engineer’s perspective and focus on technical details. You’ll also hear from industry experts from Dell Technologies and VMware.

When Is It Again?

We’re live on January 23, 2023. Not only is it free to attend, there’s no need to schlep to the airport or drink second-rate conference coffee. If you can’t be there on the 13th, you can replay the presentations at your convenience after the event on the Packet Pushers’ YouTube channel. Sign up now and we’ll see you there.
